Description

Lemon balm is also a popular natural remedy for many common skin conditions. As an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent, it helps reduce the swelling and redness of skin common in conditions such as acne, shingles, chickenpox, eczema, and psoriasis. Lemon balm cream can be made as follows: Ingredients: 1 cup fresh or dried lemon balm leaves, 1/8 cup glycerin, 2/3 cup water, 1/4 cup beeswax or other emulsifying wax. Instructions: Melt the emulsifying wax in a glass bowl placed inside a saucepan half-filled with water over low heat. The bowl should fit snugly in the saucepan but should not touch the water. This is called a double boiler. Once the wax has melted, add the glycerin, water, and lemon balm leaves (fresh or dried). Simmer for three hours over very low heat. Remove from heat and strain the mixture through a piece of cheesecloth. Stir slowly but continuously until it cools and thickens. Using a small knife or spoon, transfer the cream into sterilized dark glass jars. Refrigerate as soon as possible. Small amounts of lemon balm essential oil can be added to the cream before or after placing it in dark, sterilized glass jars to prevent mold growth and extend shelf life. Lemon balm cream can be kept refrigerated for up to three months.
